ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN FRANCE
The origins of the town
In the first half of the 13th century, Prémontré monks set up one of five vicariates planned along the Way of Saint James in an area of pastureland, cut off by oak forests and inhabited part of the year by shepherds.
The land was owned by Juan Perez de Baztán, an important figure in the court of Navarre, and it was agree that the small vicariate would form an enclave on his estate.
It would later become Ainhoa, a fortified town with houses that are perfectly aligned on either side of a wide avenue.
