The Basque wines of Iroul\u00e9guy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re a wine lover, you may already have heard of the wines of Iroul\u00e9guy,<\/strong> named after a small Basque village in Basse-Navarre<\/strong>. This small vineyard in the Basque mountains covers some 230 hectares and produces excellent red, ros\u00e9 and white wines. In 2020, it was even awarded the “Vignobles & D\u00e9couvertes” label! Don’t miss the Cave coop\u00e9rative d’Iroul\u00e9guy, the<\/g> appellation’s historic winery in Saint-\u00c9tienne-de-Ba\u00efgorry<\/g>. Basque beers<\/h2>\n\n

Blonde, dark, white, russet, amber… Basque craft beers come in all colors and flavors. Which is the best Basque beer? It’s hard to decide, since there are over 400 of them! Among the most famous and finely brewed are Belharra (Bayonne),<\/strong> La superbe (Biarritz),<\/strong> Etxeko Bob’s Beer (Hasparren),<\/strong> Akerbeltz (Licq-Ath\u00e9rey<\/strong>) and the Hizketa microbrewery (Saint-P\u00e9e-sur-Nivelle<\/strong>). <\/p>\n\n

Basque cider<\/h2>\n\n

Who said cider was the preserve of Brittany<\/strong> and Normandy?<\/strong> In the Basque Country<\/strong>, we have good ciders too! The difference is that Basque cider (sagardo meaning “apple wine”) has a higher alcohol content, around 6%. And for those who prefer a non-alcoholic toast, there are apple juices and blueberry juices to please children and adults alike. <\/p>\n\n

Basque sangria<\/h2>\n\n

Very fruity and light, Basque sangria is made from Navarre<\/strong> red wine, oranges, yellow peaches and lemon, with a hint of cinnamon, rosemary and Espelette pepper<\/strong>. Perfect as an aperitif with tapas during your vacation in the Basque Country<\/a>! <\/p>\n\n

Le Patxaran<\/h2>\n\n

Do you know Patxaran? Patxaran is an artisanal liqueur typical of the Basque<\/strong> country, made by macerating wild sloes in aniseed-flavored alcohol known as “anisette”. Legend has it that the monks of Leire<\/strong> Abbey administered this dark-red beverage to the King of Navarre,<\/strong> who was complaining of violent stomach cramps. The effect was immediate, a true miracle! Enjoy chilled as a digestive, with or without ice. <\/p>\n\n

Euskola, the Basque “coca<\/h2>\n\n

The Basque Country<\/strong> also has its own cola! Euskola is made in Bardos,<\/strong> near Bayonne<\/strong>. This 100% made-in-Euskadi soda is less sweet than industrial standards, and much better than the American version (a bit chauvinistic, us Basques). Its mascot: Basajaun, an emblematic character from Basque mythology. <\/p>\n\n

Espelette pepper gazpacho<\/h2>\n\n

Very popular in Spain, gazpacho is as refreshing as a glass of Coke in the middle of a heatwave! Excellent, quick and easy to make, this cold tomato soup is packed with vitamins. And in the Basque<\/g> region, it’s made with PDO Espelette pepper.<\/g> Le Pressoir du Pays Basque<\/strong>, in Bardos,<\/strong> has made it a specialty! <\/p>\n\n
