It is part of the European coastal path E9 and meets the GR 10 between Sare and <strong>A\u00efnhoa.<\/strong> From <strong>Cambo-les-Bains<\/strong> to <strong>Sare,<\/strong> via the <strong>Col de Pinodieta<\/strong>, the route follows part of the Piedmont route of the Camino de <strong>Compostela<\/strong>. The route alternates between valleys, small mountains, hills, pepper fields and meadows dotted with typical sheepfolds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distance Cambo &gt; Sare: 25 km, average time: 7 h, altitude gain: 950 m, difficulty level: difficult. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid=1B8W_K3KX5zojJCswBdnzbx82LGY&amp;hl=fr&amp;ll=43.31031249583745%2C-1.5082111626024508&amp;z=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">See itinerary on map<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>This rather sporty hike, reserved for experienced hikers, can easily be broken down into several stages:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cambo-les-Bains \/ Sare: 25 km<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Espelette \/ Sare: 18 km<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ascain \/ Sare: 8 km<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saint-P\u00e9e \/ Sare: 8 km<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Also read: Rando avec les enfants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/blog\/5-hikes-to-do-in-the-basque-country-this-summer\/\">5 easy family hikes in the Basque Country<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cambo-les-Bains, land of hills and valleys<\/h2>\n\n<p>Halfway between the <strong>Pyrenees<\/strong> and the Basque coast, <strong>Cambo-les-Bains<\/strong> has been a renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/blog\/well-being-camping-the-cambo-les-bains-spa-in-the-basque-country\/\">spa resort<\/a> since the 18th century. With its pediment surrounded by traditional houses, its charming squares and its green terraces overlooking the <strong>Nive<\/strong> valley, the village already sets the tone for the rest of the walk. The mountains are not far away and the scenery is magnificent. An itinerary takes you around the village to discover some of its heritage treasures, in particular the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/blog\/cambo-les-bains-villa-arnaga-and-edmond-rostand-museum\/\">Villa Arnaga<\/a>,<strong>Edmond Rostand<\/strong>&#8216;s former home, now a museum. On the higher ground, the Bergerie hill offers a beautiful view of the village of <strong>Itxassou,<\/strong> with the <strong>Pyrenees<\/strong> mountains in the distance .<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Espelette to A\u00efnhoa via the Pinodieta pass<\/h2>\n\n<p>We leave behind the hills of <strong>Labourd<\/strong> to get closer to the two charming villages <strong>of Itxassou<\/strong> and <strong>Espelette.<\/strong> Impossible to pass by without stopping. For the famous Itxassou black cherries from which a delicious jam is made. For the strings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/blog\/the-espelette-chilli-festival-last-weekend-in-october\/\">red peppers<\/a> drying slowly in the sun on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/places\/espelette-tourism\/\">Espelette<\/a> facades. We then cross meadows, moors and woods on our way to the Col de <strong>Pinodieta.<\/strong>   <\/p>\n\n<p>From Soura\u00efde, a short PR trail takes you up to the <strong>Chapelle de l&#8217;Aub\u00e9pine<\/strong> (pictured), then back over the hills to <strong>Ainhoa.<\/strong> Classified as one of the &#8220;Most Beautiful Villages in France&#8221; and surrounded by green hills, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-biper-gorri.com\/en\/blog\/vacations-in-ainhoa-what-to-see-what-to-visit\/\">village of Ainhoa<\/a> is well worth a visit, particularly for its charming traditional Basque houses, its 13th-century church and its landscaped cemetery dotted with discoidal stelae, symbols of Basque funerary art.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soura\u00efde, Saint-P\u00e9e-sur-Nivelle and Sare<\/h2>\n\n<p>Between the <strong>Pinodieta<\/strong> pass and the <strong>Rhune<\/strong> massif, the <strong>GR<\/strong> then passes through three charming villages in the Inner <strong>Basque Country<\/strong>: <strong>Soura\u00efde, Saint-P\u00e9e-sur-Nivelle<\/strong> and Sare. Ridge walkers will follow in the footsteps of Napoleon&#8217;s troops during the historic battle against the Marquis of Wellington in 1813. More than twenty redoubts and forts, dating from 1792 to 1813, can be found in the area.  <\/p>\n\n<p>To reach Sare, take &#8220;la Galtzada&#8221;, the ancient medieval road linking <strong>Saint-Jean-de-Luz<\/strong> to <strong>Zugarramurdi,<\/strong> in <strong>Spanish Navarre<\/strong>. Like its neighbor Ainhoa, Sare has also been awarded the &#8220;Most Beautiful Villages in France&#8221; label. At the foot of the Rhune and Axuria mountains , this former smugglers&#8217; village is a typical example of rural architecture in the Basque Country. The Ortillopitz house-museum in Sare, an authentic Labourdine half-timbered house dating from 1660, bears witness to life and customs in the Basque Country.
