Biarritz, Europe’s surfing cradle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was here that surfing was born in Europe<\/strong>, with the arrival of the first Californian surfers in the late 1960s. More than sixty years later, surfers from all over the world still gather in Biarritz,<\/strong> notably for nationally and internationally renowned competitions such as the French<\/strong> Surfing Championship and the Biarritz Quiksilver Ma\u00efder Arost\u00e9guy<\/strong>, the oldest competition in Europe.<\/strong> The best-known spots: the mythical C\u00f4te des Basques, dominated by Villa Belza<\/strong>, Grande plage, the Miramar<\/strong> spot and Plage de la Milady<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Hendaye, THE green trail on the Basque Coast<\/h2>\n\n

Considered one of the Basque Coast’s fallback spots, Hendaye<\/strong> Bay is accessible at all tides and is suitable for beginners to intermediate surfers. The best spots include Le Casino (“Caz” to its friends), where most surf schools are located. To the south of the bay, the Sokoburu spot is ideal for beginners. To the north of the beach, between the church of Sainte-Anne<\/strong> and the 2 Jumeaux, longboarders enjoy perfect conditions, with a long “straight” that starts at the west end of the bay. <\/p>\n\n

Things to see and do: Surfing Day in Hendaye, in June, a free day devoted to discovering surfing culture (surfing, waveskiing, stand-up paddle, Hawaiian pirogue, skimboarding…).<\/p>\n\n

Anglet’s tubes<\/h2>\n\n

With 11 spots spread over five kilometers of coastline, Anglet marks the end of the sandy beaches of the Landes<\/strong> and the beginning of the rocky coast of the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques<\/strong>. Awarded the “Ville de Surf” label by the French Surfing Federation, the Basque resort boasts a large number of renowned spots: La Madrague<\/strong>, La Barre<\/strong>, La Marinella<\/strong>, La Chambre d’Amour<\/strong> (VVF spot), where the Rip Curl Pro Anglet<\/strong> takes place every season, a stage on the world circuit. <\/p>\n\n

In July, don’t miss the International Surf Film Festival: 4 days of open-air cinema facing the ocean and surfing on the Chambre d’Amour<\/strong> site.<\/p>\n\n

The Bidart reefs<\/h2>\n\n

Between Biarritz<\/strong> and Saint-Jean-de-Luz,<\/strong> Bidart<\/a> is a two-star “surf town”. Its spots are renowned for their regularity and intensity. Backing onto the Ch\u00e2teau du Baron de l’Ep\u00e9e, on the outskirts of Biarritz,<\/strong> the beach at Ilbarritz<\/strong> is suitable for all types of surfers, beginners and experienced alike. Easily accessible from the center of Bidart,<\/strong> the Uhabia<\/strong> spot is a popular beach-break<\/strong> for surfers and bodyboarders.<\/p>\n\n

Saint-Jean-de-Luz, city of privateers… and surfers<\/h2>\n\n

The village is known for its rich historical heritage, its fishing port and its gastronomy, but also for its world-famous surf spots. Among them, the Lafitenia wave, one of the best reef breaks in Europe, attracts big-time surfers. If you’re a beginner, however, you’ll find the gentle waves of Erromardie<\/strong> beach one of the most affordable spots for beginners. <\/p>\n\n

Gu\u00e9thary surf city<\/h2>\n\n

Nestling between Bidart<\/strong> and Saint-Jean-de-Luz,<\/strong> the small fishing village of Gu\u00e9thary<\/strong> is a favorite with surfers for its pretty peaks, which can reach heights of 5 to 6 meters. These include the famous “Parlementia” and the Alcyons\/Avalanche spot, which mark the border with Bidart<\/strong>. Between Gu\u00e9thary<\/strong> and Saint-Jean-de-Luz,<\/strong> the beach at C\u00e9nitz is ideal for both beginners (on the left of the spot) and experienced surfers (on the right of the spot). <\/p>\n\n

XXL session on the legendary Belharra!<\/h2>\n\n

On the Corniche<\/strong> Basque at Urrugne<\/a>, the Belharra<\/strong> is the legendary wave of the Basque Country<\/strong>, eagerly awaited by surfers the world over. This giant wave forms only very rarely, in the event of a very large swell, and can reach a height of 20 metres. Each of his appearances is a real event. An XXL surf session reserved for experts and pros!<\/p>\n\n
