The Écomusée de la Pelote et du Xistera Pilotari, located in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, just a few kilometers from our campsite in Espelette, invites you to delve into the fascinating history of Basque pelota, a traditional sport emblematic of the Basque Country. This unique museum lets you discover the roots, equipment and techniques that have shaped the game played by generations of Basques. Through interactive exhibits and historical artifacts, you’ll learn more about the evolution of the sport and its central role in local culture. One of the special features of this eco-museum is its immersive approach. You’ll have the chance to explore the house of Donamartia, an enchanting place where Basque culture comes to life through song, the stories of Gantxiki, and the emergence of Basque pelota and Xistera, the famous traditional racket. After your visit, you’ll understand why Basque pelota is so much more than just a sport in this region.

The Écomusée de la Pelote in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle offers a unique immersion in the history and practice of this traditional Basque sport.

After this experience, Basque pelota will hold no secrets for you. It’s a sport that occupies a central place in the Basque Country, particularly in this village.

Opposite the ecomuseum, you’ll find a fronton. It’s the ideal place to try your hand at Basque pelota, watch the youngsters of the village compete in lively games or watch professional demonstrations.

  • Parking: parking is available near the fronton, opposite the ecomuseum.
