Just because you can’t go out doesn’t mean you have to stay inactive! What to do during confinement? Here are a few ideas for activities that may or may not be related to the Basque Country, so you don’t turn around like caged lions.
Listen to music to feel good
According to an INSERM study, music interacts with the brain, helps concentration, soothes our emotions, reduces stress and helps us find sleep. The musical nugget that warms our hearts (and choirs!) in this period of confinement is the cover of Leonard Cohen by the Basque choir “Orfeon Donostiarra”. To be listened to again and again without moderation! And don’t forget that the Paris Opera is making its performances available online free of charge during the lockdown. Calling all fans!
Travelling to the Basque Country from the comfort of your sofa
Virtual tours are an excellent way to travel without leaving your living room. Thanks to the Pays Basque Tourist Office, you can discover the Basque Country in 360°. A virtual journey between the sea and the mountains, so you can feel like you’re on vacation without leaving your sofa!
Watch movies to “deconvolve” without moving
In this period of quarantine, take the opportunity to watch movies with your family! Several platforms offer content to suit all tastes. And why not films shot in the Basque Country? Start with “Hors de Prix”, starring Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh as a shy waiter at the Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz. There’s also “Le Ciel, les Oiseaux et… ta mère!” with Jamel Debbouze, Patrice Leconte’s “Voir la mer”, “L’amour dure trois ans” with Gaspard Proust and Louise Bourgoin, and Étienne Chatiliez’s “Le bonheur est dans le pré”, all shot in Anglet, Bidart, Guéthary, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye…
Keep the kids busy (without screens) and active at home
After several weeks of confinement, it’s not always easy to keep the kids busy at home. It’s all about imagination. If you haven’t already heard of Mr. WIXX, don’t forget his name. These funny, sporty dance videos get the whole family moving between home school and telecommuting. Good humor guaranteed!
Cooking local recipes
During confinement, you’ll have to come up with ideas for everyday cooking. Basque gastronomy is colorful, full of flavor and, above all, convivial and generous. Among the quick and easy recipes to prepare, try your hand at making a delicious Basque cake or Philippe Etchebest’s Tartines Basques. Success guaranteed!
Getting back into reading
Several studies have shown that reading is an excellent way to combat stress. To help you get away from it all during the period of confinement, Fnac offers more than 500 books in free access in e-pub or pdf format. Also worth discovering is Project Gutenberg – a veritable web institution – with no fewer than 54,000 e-books available free of charge.
