Access to La Rhune
The main starting point for reaching the summit is the village of Sara (Sare), around 10 km from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. You can also start from Ascain, another picturesque village nearby.
Possible hikes
- Sentier des Crêtes (Access from Ascain)
- Distance: approx. 12 km (round trip)
- Duration: 4 to 5 hours
- Difficulty: medium
- Description: this trail takes you through a forest of oak and beech trees, before gradually climbing to the summit. Views begin to open up as you climb. The path is well-marked, but some sections can be steep.
- Path from the Col de Saint-Ignace
- Distance: approx. 7 km (round trip)
- Duration: 2 to 3 hours
- Difficulty: easy to medium
- Description: This is a shorter hike, ideal for families. It starts at the Col de Saint-Ignace, and is accessible even to less experienced hikers. You’ll discover a variety of landscapes, with meadows and magnificent views over the valley.
- Le Petit Train de la Rhune
- Description: if you prefer a more leisurely experience, the little cogwheel train takes you to the top of the Rhune. Although this is not a walking tour, you’ll have the chance to take a short stroll to the top to explore the ridges and enjoy the views.
